In 1986, newly appointed journal editor, Ingert Kuzych, made the Ukrainian Philatelist a semi-annual publication. (It had previously only come out once a year.) In order to recognize outstanding articles in the expanded publication and to help stimulate additional submissions, in 1987 he established the Eugene Kotyk Award – named after the society’s first journal editor. For best article in the previous year’s Ukrainian Philatelist
