During its first two years, the newly established Society of Ukrainian Philatelists sponsored three exhibitions that were described simply as: ВИСТАВА УКРАЇНСЬКИХ ПОШТОВИХ МАРОК В З.Д.А. (Exhibition of Ukrainian Postal Stamps in the USA). It was not until 30 years later that a regular annual exhibition began to be held under the UKRAINPEX (later UKRAINEPEX) name.
At a stamp show, the palmares is the official list of awards for the exhibit competition, recording all medals and special prizes conferred by the judges. UPNS members regularly take part in stamp show exhibit and literature competitions, earning medals across the full range of award levels (gold, vermeil, silver, bronze). 1 The Millennium of Ukrainian Christianity was the impetus behind the UPNS sponsoring two UKRAINPEX shows in 1988, one in Silver Spring, MD and another in Toronto, Ontario. 2 For the society’s 50th anniversary year in 2001, two UPNS-sponsored UKRAINPEX shows were to be convened, one in Edmonton, Alberta and a second in New York City. The first was successfully held, but the 9-11 terrorist attacks forced the society to cancel the latter show (scheduled for 6-7 October 2001). A hastily organized alternate get-together – renamed FREEDOMPEX – was set up at the Ukrainian Homestead Resort in Lehighton, PA during 10-11 November and was very well attended. 3 The COVID pandemic forced the cancellation of the Plymouth Show (scheduled for 25-26 April 2020), which was to have been the site of UKRAINPEX 2020. |
